The 2023 Lunar New Year will begin on January 22 and will mark the Year of the Rabbit until the 15th day signaling the end with the Lantern Festival. The Lunar New Year is a major holiday in East and Southeast Asian cultures, such as China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Korea, and many others. It is a time for families to gather, exchange gifts, and celebrate with traditional foods and customs.

Signed into law on June 23, 1972, by President Richard Nixon, Title IX of the Civil Rights Act states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to share the proclamation with enslaved African Americans living in that state, which numbered more than 250,000, that they were free and should be treated has hired workers. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, a full two years prior to the arrival of Granger in Texas, there were still many slaves who were not freed by slave owners even after 1865. Many slave owners did not free their slaves until after the follow harvest and others still not until ordered to do so by a government representative.
